Chess Grandmaster Praggnanandaa Meets Chief Minister M.K. Stalin

On August 30th, 2023, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin congratulated Chess Grand Master Praggnanandaa for securing the second place in the FIDE World Cup Chess Championship held in Azerbaijan. During a meeting at the camp office, Chief Minister Stalin presented Praggnanandaa with a check of ₹30 lakh as an incentive, along with a memento. Praggnanandaa, who had won a silver medal at the tournament, returned to Chennai this morning and personally met with Chief Minister Stalin to express his greetings. As a gesture of recognition and on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, Chief Minister Stalin honored Praggnanandaa’s achievement by presenting him with the financial reward. On his return to Chennai today, Praggnanandaa personally visited the residence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, where he warmly greeted him. Praggnanandaa, who had achieved the remarkable feat of winning a silver medal in the World Chess Championship held in Baku, Azerbaijan, proudly showcased his well-earned medal to the Chief Minister. The young talent from Tamil Nadu received a spirited welcome upon his arrival and was even treated to a tea party hosted by the Chief Minister. Notably, Praggnanandaa’s exceptional performance in the World Cup Chess Series included a victory over Indian player Arjun Erigaisi in the quarter-finals, making him only the second Indian in history to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament. In the gripping semi-finals of the FIDE World Cup Chess Championship, Indian Grandmaster Praggnanandaa from Tamil Nadu faced off against World No. 2 Fabiano Caruana, with both matches ending in draws. Consequently, a tiebreaker was held to determine the victor, in which Praggnanandaa exhibited his prowess by winning and securing a place in the finals. After three days and four games featuring two different formats, Magnus Carlsen clinched his first-ever FIDE World Cup title by defeating Praggnanandaa in the final match. The event was attended by notable figures including Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development Udhayanidhi Stalin, Youth Welfare and Sports Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department Additional Chief Secretary Atulya Misra, Tamil Nadu Sports Development Commission Member Secretary J. Meghanatha Reddy, and Praggnanandaa’s parents.
