37-Year Streak Ends: Gukesh Emerges as India’s New No. 1 Chess Player, Succeeding Viswanathan Anand

Tamil Nadu’s Gukesh has emerged as India’s new top chess player, claiming the 8th spot globally with 2,758 points, relegating former world champion Viswanathan Anand to 9th place with 2,754 points in international rankings. Anand’s 37-year reign as India’s No. 1 player,1986, has come to an end, marking a significant shift. Pragnananda from Tamil Nadu ranks 19th globally. Anand’s influence is evident as Gukesh looks up to him as a role model. The 17-year-old prodigy, hailing from Chennai and one of India’s Grand Masters, attained the title in 2019. At the age of 16, he achieved a remarkable feat by defeating a world champion, setting a notable record. Gukesh’s recent achievement includes becoming the youngest player to achieve a live rating of 2750.
