Criminal defamation charges were filed against Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami, and BJP State President, K Annamalai, by the City Public Prosecutor on behalf of Chief Minister MK Stalin in the principal sessions court, Chennai. The petition alleges defamation stemming from accusations of the Chief Minister’s involvement with drug peddlers, made by Palaniswami during a press conference on March 8th and through a Twitter post by Annamalai. The petition also underscored Chief Minister Stalin’s efforts to eliminate narcotic drugs in the state, detailing initiatives such as Operation Ganja&Gutkha 2.0, which resulted in the arrest of 2,423 individuals and the seizure of 3,562 kilograms of ganja between March 2022 and April 2022. Additionally, it mentioned the State’s measures to maintain zero cultivation of ganja, with 72 cases filed against narcotics offenders and properties worth ₹17.87 crores seized. Special checks near educational institutions were conducted to curb the sale of ganja & gutkha, alongside awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to educate youth about the dangers of narcotic drugs.
