India-UK FTA Talks Conclude Ahead of Election Schedule

The fourteenth round of free trade agreement (FTA) talks between India and the UK concluded on Friday, anticipating the forthcoming general election schedule announcement by the Election Commission on Saturday. UK officials familiar with the discussions expected the closure as India enters election campaign mode, with the next round of formal trade talks likely after the Lok Sabha polls. The negotiations, initiated in January 2022, aim for an “ambitious” outcome to bolster bilateral trade, currently valued at around GBP 38.1 billion annually based on last month’s official statistics.
