PM Modi Commends India’s Coal Production Surpassing 1 Billion Tonnes for First Time

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed India’s crossing of 1 billion tonnes in coal and lignite production during 2023-24 as a historic milestone, emphasizing the country’s commitment to a vibrant coal sector and its significance in achieving self-reliance. His remarks came in response to Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi’s statement, attributing the milestone to government support and capacity expansion, resulting in over 70 percent growth in production over the last decade. Additionally, the increase in domestic coal production has significantly reduced coal imports for blending by thermal power plants, amounting to 19.36 million tonnes from April 2023 to January 2024 compared to the previous year, according to the Coal Ministry.
