Three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Murugan, Jayakumar, and Robert Payas, who were released after decades of incarceration, departed for their home country, Sri Lanka, from Tiruchy special camp under tight security measures. They were escorted to Chennai airport and boarded a Sri Lankan Airlines flight to Colombo, following the Centre’s permission for their return, marking the end of a 35-year legal saga. Their fellow convict Santhan had passed away a few weeks earlier while awaiting approval to return. The Sri Lankan High Commission had issued passports to the released convicts on March 26th, bringing closure to a long chapter in the case’s history.
