18-Year-Old Elephant Found Dead with Missing Tusks in Tamil Nadu’s Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve

In Erode, Tamil Nadu, tragedy struck as an 18-year-old male elephant was discovered dead, its tusks missing, near Thalavadi within the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. Forest officials, during routine patrols in the Gumdapuram forest area, made the grim find and promptly informed District Forest Officer Sathish. A team, including a veterinary doctor, was dispatched to assess the situation. Initial examinations suggest poisoning as the likely cause of death, with tusks subsequently removed. A post-mortem was conducted, and samples were sent for medical analysis to confirm the cause. The carcass was left in situ for natural scavenging.
