HC Directs Police to Provide Security to Transgender Candidate Filing Election Nomination

In New Delhi, the Delhi High Court emphasized the state’s responsibility to safeguard and enforce the rights of transgender individuals as guaranteed under the Constitution. The court directed the police to provide necessary security to a transgender person, Rajan Singh, intending to file a nomination for the Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi Parliamentary Constituency. Singh, supported by the Rashtriya Bahujan Congress Party, cited a recent “life-threatening attack” at his office in Badarpur and sought protection of his fundamental rights. Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta stressed that discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity undermines the constitutional principle of equality, particularly in the election process, protected by Article 14.
