Second Elephant Fatality in a Month: Train Speed Violation Prompts Action in Palakkad, Kerala

An adult female wild elephant died late Monday night near Kanjikode in Palakkad, Kerala, after being struck by a train, marking the second such incident in the district within a month. Kerala Forest Minister A K Saseendran stated on Tuesday that preliminary investigations indicate the train exceeded the area’s stipulated speed limit, prompting authorities to file a case against the loco pilot under relevant provisions of the Wildlife Act. Earlier reports indicated the speed limit in the area was 45 kilometers per hour.
