Madras High Court Addresses Alleged Threats to Inmate Savukku Shankar, Directs Transfer Consideration

The Madras High Court, with Justices AD Jagadish Chandira and R Kalaimathi presiding, directed the Director General of Police to review the plea of Savukku Shankar’s mother, seeking his transfer from Coimbatore prison due to alleged life threats. The court received a habeas corpus petition from A Kamala, Shankar’s mother, along with a report from the Coimbatore legal services authority on his health and an order from the fourth judicial magistrate concerning Shankar’s claims of assault by prison authorities. Additionally, the court ordered the superintendent of Coimbatore central prison to ensure Shankar receives medical care at Coimbatore Medical College hospital and obtain a fit for remand certificate. Shankar was subsequently admitted to the CMC hospital. Senior counsel R John Sathyan, representing Shankar, highlighted alleged life threats due to animosity from the prison superintendent, urging for his transfer. The court allowed the petitioner to approach the State Human Rights Commission regarding alleged prison torture, directing the state to consider the representation and issue an order accordingly.
