Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rainfall, Red Alerts Issued in Several Districts

Heavy downpours persisted over several districts in Tamil Nadu over the past two days, with ongoing alerts issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) for Kanyakumari, Theni, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi districts. A red alert has been declared for these areas for the next two days, while heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Virudhunagar, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Dindigul districts. Thirteen other districts have been issued a yellow alert for heavy rain. The rest of the state may experience light to moderate rain and thunderstorm activity with wind speeds of 30-40 km/h over the next three days. Tiruvannamalai district recorded the highest rainfall at 12 cm in the last 24 hours, followed by Kanyakumari, Tirupathur, Nilgiris, and Coimbatore. Despite the southwest monsoon’s onset in Kerala, intense rainfall activity is not expected in Tamil Nadu until later, as clarified by an RMC official. In preparation, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH) has instructed district health officers to ready health centers for the upcoming monsoon.
