Meeting on Kerala’s Mullaperiyar Dam Proposal Cancelled Amid Tamil Nadu’s Opposition

The meeting of the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) on river valley and hydroelectric projects, scheduled by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has been cancelled amid Tamil Nadu’s strong objection to Kerala’s proposal for a new Mullaperiyar dam. It is unlikely to reconvene before June 4th, the day of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections’ counting. The EAC, set to convene in Delhi for its 11th meeting, received notification of the cancellation, with the next session anticipated post-elections. The committee focuses on the projects’ viability and environmental concerns. Kerala’s previous attempts and proposals were delisted by the ministry, respecting a Supreme Court order requiring mutual agreement between both states. Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s current proposal was criticized by CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan, who urged the Union government and the expert appraisal commission to abandon the plans, echoing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin’s commitment to legal action if the proposal violates court orders and affects the state’s irrigation rights.
