Mani Shankar Aiyar Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Indian Foreign Service

Congress leader and former diplomat Mani Shankar Aiyar sparked controversy by describing the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) as an “upper caste” service comprising “Macaulay ki aulad,” suggesting it was becoming more inclusive. Aiyar, speaking at the launch of author Kallol Bhattacherjee’s “Nehru’s First Recruit,” referred to himself as the “last IFS recruit” of Jawaharlal Nehru, also addressing the 1962 Indo-China war as an alleged “Chinese invasion” before retracting and apologizing for the term used.
