Madras High Court Seeks Status Report on Puzhal Prison Canteen Closure

The Madras High Court instructed Puzhal Central prison authorities to submit a status report on the functioning of the prison canteen following a petition filed by inmate Fakrudeen, alleging adverse effects of its closure. Fakrudeen sought the reopening of the canteen, stating its closure in March severely impacted the supply of essential items like soap, bread, biscuits, and toothpaste to inmates. The court heard submissions from both sides, with the additional public prosecutor stating the canteen is operational. The bench scheduled further hearings for June 12th, awaiting the status report from the prison authorities.
