Increase in release of water from Karnataka’s KRS and Kabini dams to Tamil Nadu

Yesterday, 4,200 cubic feet of water was released from Karnataka’s KRS and Kabini dams to Tamil Nadu. The release has now been increased to 6,300 cubic feet. The Cauvery Water Management Authority’s 23rd meeting was chaired by SK Haldar, with officials from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puduvai participating in person, and Karnataka officials participating via video conference. In the meeting, it was ordered that Karnataka release water continuously for ten days, at a rate of 24,000 cubic feet per second, to protect Tamil Nadu’s rice crop. They also emphasized the immediate release of the outstanding 45.05 TMC of water over the last two months. Karnataka officials expressed strong opposition, citing low water levels due to a 47% deficit in monsoon rainfall and insufficient reservoir levels. They warned that meeting Tamil Nadu’s request would lead to drinking water scarcity in Karnataka. Puducherry and Kerala also presented their demands to the Cauvery Commission. After considering all sides, Chairman SK Haldar announced acceptance of the committee’s recommendation. Accordingly, Tamil Nadu will get 5,000 cubic feet of water daily from the Cauvery in Karnataka for the next 15 days. As per the directive, the water release from Karnataka dams into the Cauvery has been raised from 4,293 cubic feet to 6,398 cubic feet. Specifically, the KRS dam’s water release into the Cauvery river is now at 4,393 cubic feet. The Kabini Dam has consistently released 2,000 cubic feet of excess water into the Cauvery River for the 4th consecutive day.
