In light of the strong “special relationship” between India and Singapore, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced its decision to permit the export of rice, addressing Singapore’s food security needs. The MEA spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, highlighted the close strategic partnership, economic ties, and people-to-people connections between the two nations. The MEA plans to issue formal orders for the rice export soon. Notably, India recently imposed additional safeguards on basmati rice exports to prevent the unauthorized export of non-basmati white rice, following reports of misclassification and illegal export. The government has reported that non-basmati white rice is being exported using the HS codes for parboiled rice and basmati rice. Despite restrictions, rice exports have remained high, prompting the central government to amend export norms on July 20, categorizing non-basmati white rice as “prohibited.” This change, from a “free” to “prohibited” export policy, was enforced immediately to curb the export of non-basmati white rice, ensuring domestic food security and stabilizing prices.
