Centre Declares September 17th as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ Annually

In Hyderabad, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced that September 17th will be commemorated annually as “Hyderabad Liberation Day,” formalized through a gazette notification. The decision acknowledges Hyderabad’s 13-month rule under Nizam until its liberation on September 17th, 1948, through ‘Operation Polo’. Responding to public demand and honoring liberation martyrs, the Government of India established this annual observance. The BJP, particularly Union Home Minister Amit Shah, criticized Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi for not recognizing the occasion. Despite previous Union Ministry of Culture celebrations, political parties, including the former BRS government, had been hesitant, designating September 17th as “National Integration Day,” often tied to votebank politics.
